I would take things very literally as a kid. And one of the phrases that had me confused for a long time? "Read between the lines."
But why? Because I wanted to find something, anything that would explain the things that I was missing as a reader. Well, you grow older and you learn more. It's not to be taken literally; rather, it was a way of telling you to pay extra attention to the way the language is used. In anger, sadness, surprise, and it goes on and on.
The way you read any word problem, or look for context; there are bread crumbs that will help you to understand what you are truly meant to find. The small words that are sometimes glossed over when you are only reading for fun. You look deeper, the spaces between that explain what you are looking at throughout the reading.
In life, we should learn how to dig between the words spoken or read. Be keen on paying complete attention to others; many a friendship, partnership, or even a relationship have been lost over not reading between the lines.
Pay attention, a wise person can say much in few words; while the stupid can yammer on and on and say nothing!
